Demand that the makeup
First, know that you’re not just one person. Women all over the world are starting to demand that the makeup they put on their faces and the lotions they put on their bodies be manufactured without abusing animals. And lots of companies are Cosmetics store springing up to meet that need. Switching from your current makeup routine to one that is cruelty-free is easier than ever. Here’s how.
- Start with a current list of cosmetics companies that do not test their products on animals. (There’s one at PETA.) New companies are making the list daily.
- Now take an inventory of what’s already on your vanity table. Surprisingly, you may find you already have many animal-friendly products. Popular mineral makeups like Bare Minerals, are non-animal tested. You probably already own makeup from the drug store or department store that, when checking against your list, will prove to be cruelty-free. Almay, Bobbi Brown, MAC, Citré Shine hair products, Dermablend, John Paul Mitchell, OPI, and many other commonly known brands are all keepers.
- Specialty cosmetics stores like Ulta or Sephora carry many non-animal tested brands. If you’ve been shopping there, you’re in good shape with makeup from Urban Decay, Smashbox, and Philosophy. And if you go to the health food store, you may have brought back critter-loving products by Zia, Aubrey Organics, or Hauschka.
- After taking an inventory of what you have, put aside the cosmetics that don’t yet fit into your keep list. It’s time to check their websites. - When checking websites, look for animal-testing information in the FAQs sections, the company philosophy sections, or the product information section. If you can’t anything, email them from their site and ask. They usually answer within a few days.
- Don’t throw out what you already have. Instead, replace old cosmetics with cruelty-free equivalents, as they run out.
- When you do buy new, non-animal tested products, make sure they do for you what your old products did. You don’t want to waste money trying makeup or skincare products that you can’t use.
How can you save money?
- Read lots of product reviews. Just type the product’s name and the word review into your search engine.
- Join an Internet makeup forum – there are lots of them out there – and ask your forum friends what they’re using.
- And finally, buy cosmetics from places that accept returns. Just keep your purchase receipt and packaging until after trying the new makeup.
